Vintage Telephones

P1050389

Vintage telephones add so much charm and elegance to a room or office. Western Electric made the finest telephones in the world, with all metal bases and time tested bakelite handles. Their telephone technology was above and beyond the competition. A 1930s model 202 with an E1 handset like the one above was the pinnacle of telephone design during the Deco era. There’s nothing like dialing a call on a clickity clack sounding refurbished rotary dial, as it makes every call feel important. The separate ringer box which accompanied this model had beautifully cast brass bells, making a beautiful sound, much like the sound one would hear while watching a Hollywood film of the 1930s with a telephone in the scene.

In order to keep elegant old telephones alive and working, Hartong International fully refurbishes each model with an obsessive attention to the fine details. The 1930s Western Electric Model 202 displayed above is offered for sale in our store. Like all the vintage and antique telephones we carry, they have been fully refurbished with stunning glossy paint, new or inspected NOS wiring and updated networks to work on all traditional telephone lines. Many of our telephones can be used on cable internet based telephone services with a simple adapter. The example pictured has a beautiful Italian leather base pad, which keeps your furniture free of scratches and allows the telephone to stay in place when dialing a call.

Large Antique Oil on Canvas, Gentlemen in Formal Attire, Lovely Original Portrait

il_fullxfull.400815379_brtx

SOLD

Offering an early 20th century (1900-1910) antique oil painting of two gentlemen and a young butler. Unsigned, but this was generally the case with many portraits from this era. The original frame, which is no longer present, would have displayed a brass plate with the family name and the artists details. This portrait was painted by a highly skilled painter, with an excellent grasp of using loose brush strokes for a formal painting. A very desirable style, showing great skill. The artist was very gifted and likely schooled in Europe. This painting was obtained in the New York City area.

The condition of the painting is excellent, with no areas of significant damage. A very fine example with some creases showing the stretcher from behind. It has a beautiful clean finish and a glossy older varnish present, which has protected the paint. The frame is suited well to the painting, but not the original frame.

Jupiterlicht Stage Cinema Spotlight, 1920’s Berlin

JUPITERLICHT

MADE IN GERMANY

A very rare early German cinema/stage light, which has been rewired with a period fabric cord.  Would be a very stylish decorative living room piece.  The wiring can handle up to 500 watts, but for domestic use, such as using it next to a sofa, 40-100 watts would be sufficient.  It currently has a 40 watt bulb fitted, which I find ideal to read under.

The construction is very solid, with many pieces made of a light alloy and a cast iron base.  The height adjustable handle is made of ebonized bakelite.  The original glass and internal reflector are in exceptional condition.  The wiring had been redone for domestic use, with an on/off switch attached to the cord and a new period style plug.  The fixture and base have been repainted.  At a point in it’s life, someone hand-painted the light housing, so it had to be sanded, in order to achieve a smooth finish.  The light has some dings, as expected of a period item, which evidently got lots of use.

During the 1920s, Berlin was one of the worlds premier film, cabaret and arts centres.  The classic movie, Metropolis was filmed during this period.  Jupiterlicht must have been the most advanced and desired lighting during the era.

There are very few surviving Jupiterlicht lights from this period, none of which seem to be for sale.  It’s also highly unusual to see one, which had been made for the North American market.  Truly a rare piece!
