Large Original Portrait Painting By Aiden Lassell Ripley, Young Woman In Riding Attire, Signed & Dated 1935

IMG_6132

Large portrait painting by Aiden Lassell Ripley (American, 1896-1969) of Lexington, Massachusetts. Untitled. Watercolour signed and dated 1935. The portrait painting displays an attractive young lady in outdoor or riding attire. It has not been examined outside the frame, but it’s possible there’s a name or title on the rear. This painting was acquired in Western Massachusetts, so it’s likely the background scenery is of the Berkshires. Painted in late autumn or winter of 1935. The colours are vibrant for a watercolour of this age, with no age related issues. Fantastic details and composition. No damage to the watercolour. The mat has some spotting and a small light stain on the bottom right side corner. The portrait is framed in a large intricate gilded frame. Some minor water damage to the plaster of the gilded frame along the bottom portion, with a few small pieces of missing plaster. The portrait painting can hang as it is, or the watercolour can be re-matted and the gilded frame repaired.

Dimensions: 32.5″ x 38.5″ (window 19.5″ x 24″)

Large Antique Oil on Canvas, Gentlemen in Formal Attire, Lovely Original Portrait

il_fullxfull.400815379_brtx

SOLD

Offering an early 20th century (1900-1910) antique oil painting of two gentlemen and a young butler. Unsigned, but this was generally the case with many portraits from this era. The original frame, which is no longer present, would have displayed a brass plate with the family name and the artists details. This portrait was painted by a highly skilled painter, with an excellent grasp of using loose brush strokes for a formal painting. A very desirable style, showing great skill. The artist was very gifted and likely schooled in Europe. This painting was obtained in the New York City area.

The condition of the painting is excellent, with no areas of significant damage. A very fine example with some creases showing the stretcher from behind. It has a beautiful clean finish and a glossy older varnish present, which has protected the paint. The frame is suited well to the painting, but not the original frame.

Size: 19.5″x30.5″

A Review of Hartong International, By Salvaged Grace

“Volume doesn’t matter in a shop with pieces as elegant, sophisticated, and restrained as Hartong International. It’s clear that Jason Hartong, the proprietor who has a background in art history, selects his inventory with care. Most pieces are of European descent and although they may be pedigreed, the shop feels very timeless and distinguished.”  For more, visit Salvaged Grace.

Aquatint Engraving of Magdalen Tower, From The Bridge, Oxford, Printed in 1802, Very Good Condition, Large Original Engraving

Offered at $450.- SOLD

A lovely original Aquatint Engraving of Oxford, from 1802. It’s a very large engraving with fine details and excellent colouring. There is a very slight bit of foxing at the top of the engraving. The overall condition is good and is clean of any serious damage. It’s an impressive print, in size and overall condition.

The frame is black and likely from the later part of the 19th century. The glass is wavy, which is very desirable, as it shows the print was framed a very longtime ago.

It’s remarkable, how little the architecture has changed in busy Oxford, since the Industrial Revolution! Besides street lights, cars and bicycles, the picture hasn’t changed much.

French Village Scene, Paul Louis Salvan (1877-1962) Beautiful Impressionist Oil Painting

Paul Louis Salvan (1877-1962), French

Oil on Canvas, Size 27cm x 35cm

Offering an early Paul Louis Salvan painting.  He’s a listed French painter and well sought by collectors.  Definitely late 19th century and an early work for the artist.  Impressionistic in painting style and of rural France, which was a favourite of many artists from the period.  The colours are brilliant and the style is fairly loose, with a fine grasp of scale and composition.

The painting is in fantastic condition, with no cracks or surface wear.  The colours are bright and the painting is clean.  The framing is likely original.  The rear of the stretcher has the dimensions, 35cm x27cm and an anchor emblem stamped into the top stretcher.  The frame does show typical wear to the gilt and black paint.

Overall a fine little painting from a known French artist.  A very nice piece!

Offered at $1100.- SOLD

Portrait of a Stunning Young Lady, By George Hill, Dated 1930

Portrait of a Beautiful 1930s Lady
Dated 1930
By George Hill (1898-1969)
Stunning Large Scale Painting in Gilt Frame
Oil on Canvas
Framed 39″ x 43″
Offered at $2400.- SOLD

Offering a beautifully painted portrait of a young lady in a seated pose, with Classical styled clothing. The style has it’s roots in the 19th Century Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. There are several features, which indicate Pre-Raphaelite elements and overall feel. The composition and colours are exceptional. A very well painted portrait, with fantastic detail. The painting is nearly scaled to life-size, therefore the painting is rather large.
The gilt frame is of a very high quality, consisting of two frame layers. The gilding is in fine condition, with only minimal areas of it scratched off. The frame is very well constructed and heavy. Definitely suited to a finely painted portrait. It appears the frame was custom made from the same period, meaning it was likely original to the painting.
There are many fine cracks and puckers in the painting, but no missing paint or fading. Vibrant colour and details make it timeless. The paint seems to be firmly affixed to the high quality canvas. The painting hung over an old New England fireplace mantle, hence the distressed texture to the paint surface.
She’s absolutely lovely!

Young Lady with Dog, 1938

YOUNG LADY WITH DOG

Signed and Dated 1938

A pre-WWII portrait of a lady seated in period clothing with a small dog.  The painting is signed, but the name of the artist is hard to read.  The painter obviously had formal training, as the proportions and composition are well thought out.  It appears to have been created over several sittings, with many layers of paint present.  It’s a vibrant painting in both colour and subject. The plaster copper leaf frame is complimentary to several details within the painting.  The frame has a few small repairs to the plaster, which are blended in rather well and only noticeable with a close inspection. The frame measures 24″x31″.

I was told it was painted in Massachusetts.  The subject in the painting is holding a cigarette, but be assured the painting itself has no offensive smells.

Offered at $545.- SOLD
